Gavan & Barker provided planning and design services for this streetscape revitalization project. The work included a study for the 1st Street Corridor from Moreland St. to Van Buren St., and final design for the first phase of construction between Fillmore Street and McKinley Street. The purpose of the study was to identify a set of preferred urban design improvement and treatment guidelines that can be implemented either in conjunction with new development, or through direct public or private capital investment.
Although the primary focus was to create a unique pedestrian environment, a holistic design approach was used to determine The first phase improvements provide an enhanced pedestrian environment that is more comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, and more attractive to potential land developers. In addition to planting trees, the street was narrowed, infrastructure was improved, lighting was added, and new hardscape design was incorporated, creating a unique streetscape theme.
