Oak Street Basin & Storm Drain
Flood Control District of Maricopa County / City of Mesa, AZ
Designed for the Flood Control District in conjunction with the City of Mesa, the project includes two storm drains; one in Hawes Road and the other in Oak Street. The storm drains capture runoff from the Usery Mountains and convey it to the Oak Street Basin site at the northeast corner of Oak Street and Hawes Road. The basin is designed to store the runoff from the 100-year flood and release it, at a much reduced flow rate, into the existing Hawes Road Channel that runs from Oak Street down to the McDowell Road Storm Drain.
This project required careful attention to the aesthetic design in order to gain acceptance from the neighboring property owners. Gaining that acceptance required the design to be consistent with the existing visual character of the site; minimizing disturbance and preserving the natural character of the land. Through a series of public meetings, PAAC meetings, and one-on-one property owner meetings, Gavan & Barker was able to gain acceptance for the basin design as well as the design of several large floodwater inlets that will be placed in the front yards of some of the nearby homeowners.
