Reach 11 Sports Complex
City of Phoenix, AZ
Valley Forward Award Winner
The Reach 11 Sports Complex is a premier soccer facility; one of the finest in the country. Gavan & Barker provided civil engineering and landscape architectural services from the master plan phase through construction for this award winning 143-acre sports complex. It is located within the floodwater storage reservoir on the upstream side of the CAP Canal, east of Cave Creek Road. The site’s primary function is to provide flood protection for the CAP Canal as well as thousands of downstream homes. Our team designed the complex with a series of terraces to preserve the reservoir’s floodwater storage volume while providing 10-year flood protection for the lowest soccer fields and 100-year protection for the restroom and maintenance buildings. This multi-use facility includes 18 championship soccer fields and provides much needed flood protection for the north Phoenix area.
The sports complex at Reach 11 was carefully laid out to minimize disturbance while planning and designing 18 soccer fields, 2-restroom/concession buildings, ramadas, playground, maintenance facility, 2000 car parking lot, trail underpass and trail connections. The parking layout includes large revegetated islands that were designed to harvest runoff from the parking lot and to help break up the large expanse of asphalt pavement. The landscape design of the site incorporated native species and salvaged trees, enabling the character of the natural desert habitat to be preserved while giving the park a special sense of place consistent with its surroundings.
