Sun Metro Lift Operations and Maintenance Facility

Bus Maintenance Facility

In an effort to update the City’s bus maintenance and service facilities built in the 1920's, the FWTA retained Huitt-Zollars to provide complete architectural and engineering services. The renovated 15-acre complex encompasses an administrative center, vehicle maintenance structure, body shop, and service, wash, and yard maintenance buildings. Huitt-Zollars’ contract included schematic drawings, detailed A/E designs, contract plans and specifications, and equipment layouts, while supervising all construction activities to ensure a quality finished product.

Waco Transit Maintenance Facility

The previous Waco Transit Maintenance Facility was significantly undersized and did not meet the needs of a modern transit operation. Huitt-Zollars was responsible for all conventional building and site design, including fueling and distribution of maintenance fluids. Huitt-Zollars participated in the bidding and contractor solicitations and review and was involved during the construction process. The project was subject to Federal Transit Administration (FTA) oversize regulations.

DART Northwest Rail Operating Facility (NWROF)

Huitt-Zollars provided MEP and structural design for DART’s new Northwest Rail Operating Facility. The NWROF will house the Service & Inspection Building which provides daily servicing, scheduled inspections, running repair, wheel truing, and component change-out. In addition, a new Way Service Administration Building will be devoted to the maintenance of way operations for the system expansion.

North Operations and Maintenance Facility

Huitt-Zollars served as Prime Consultant and Project Manager for coordination of all building and site programming and design. Huitt-Zollars also served as Engineer-of-Record for structural, mechanical, plumbing/piping, fire protection and electrical engineering. The new North Operations and Maintenance Facility has a footprint of 55,650 SF with a second level accounting for an additional 25,000 SF for operator-related functions and includes repair bays, maintenance offices, restroom/locker/showers, lunch room, brake shop, common work area, and a parts storeroom.

Plano Transit Village

Plano Transit Village offers a unique alternative for living and commuting in a large metropolitan area. Huitt-Zollars provided the design of streetscape consisting of trees on 25-foot centers, pedestrian scale streetlights on 75-foot centers and brick sidewalks on a concrete base. This project also included the design of perimeter drainage to collect roof downspouts and courtyard area drains. Extensive coordination with DART officials and their engineering consultants was necessary to assure compatibility between the designs.

Midtown Livable Centers Study

The study evaluated public realm and land use conditions in a 64-block area centered around the HCC/Ensemble light rail station on the Main Street line. It developed a vision and recommendations for improvements of the public realm, aimed at supporting and encouraging increased pedestrian and commercial activity, as well as increased residential land use. The goal of the study is to identify an overall strategy for the neighborhood with viable and prioritized projects.

Downtown and East Downtown Houston Livable Centers Study

This study included economic strategy, market analysis, public involvement, planning, and architecture for a Livable Centers Study focusing on an 11 x 16 block in Downtown & East Downtown Houston. It addressed the need to increase private and residential development; create walkable, mixed-use places; increase transportation and economic growth while improving the quality of the environment. A long-term plan was created along with a roadmap to strengthen and link the existing centers of activity with the study area.

Addison Circle

Huitt-Zollars was responsible for concept and development plans of street and block, water, wastewater, drainage, electrical duct banks, and franchise utilities for this 75-acre master planned multi-family and commercial retail community. The community was developed in multiple phases and included the construction of an office tower, six four-story apartment buildings with ground floor retail, and one eight-story apartment building.

Trinity Railway Express (TRE) Commuter Rail System

The TRE Commuter Rail System extends along the existing 34-mile Rock Island Railroad corridor. Planning, development, and operation of the commuter rail service is jointly sponsored by Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) and FWTA. The initial 11-mile service between downtown Dallas and the City of Irving was planned and designed by Huitt-Zollars for DART. This starter system employs self-propelled DMV cars and has four stations. The FWTA retained Huitt-Zollars to plan and design a 24-mile extension from Irving to downtown Fort Worth.
