Historic McKinney Avenue Trolley

Huitt-Zollars conducted route alignment, engineering, patronage, funding, environmental, systems, and vehicle technology studies for two extensions to the existing trolley system. The northerly extension brings the system to the existing CityPlace office and commercial development and its station for the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) LRT rail system.

LRT Line Section NW-3

Huitt-Zollars to prepared the final design for Line Section NW-3. As a portion of DART’s Northwest Corridor, NW-3 is approximately 5.5 miles in length and includes three miles at-grade and 2.5 miles of aerial guideway, two elevated stations and one at-grade station, a railroad yard relocation track which leads into the maintenance facility, and track work for future Irving Line connections. Key challenges included numerous street closures, cross street reconstructions, traffic control, major utility relocations, and coordination with highway projects in the corridors.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) General Engineering Contract

Huitt-Zollars served as the General Engineering Consultant for facilities design and construction. The program’s overall cost exceeded $1 billion and included a 21‑mile LRT System, an 11-mile commuter rail system, plus numerous transit centers for improved bus and express bus services. The 21-mile LRT system was developed within railroad, electric transmission line, and roadway rights‑of‑way. Key features along the corridor consist of a 3.5-mile twin bore transit tunnel located below US-75; a transit mall in downtown Dallas; a 2,000-LF bridge across the Trinity River; and two extended grade

METRO Bus Rapid Transit Stations

Huitt-Zollars provided architectural, civil engineering, structural engineering, electrical engineering design and surveying services for signature bus service along Bellaire Boulevard. Huitt-Zollars also prepared the conceptual design and final construction documents for the project. Collaborating with Houston METRO’s staff, the scope of work included the conceptual and final design of 14 signature bus shelters, porcelain tile pavers, logo, banners, lighting, lane markings, selective demolition, and signage for METRO’s “Quickline” Bus Rapid Transit service. Bellaire Boulevard is a signific

Sesquicentennial Park

Huitt-Zollars performed design and construction phase architectural and engineering services for Phase 2B of this historically significant project. Construction began in 1986, the Sesquicentennial (150 years) after the defeat of Santa Ana by General Sam Houston. Work included design of structural walls, observation of architectural masonry walls, reconstruction of the Congress Street bridge and architectural traffic railing, steel sheet piling, and concrete retaining walls; amphitheater, architectural, and engineering design of field modifications; agency coordination; and review of technic

Mountain Peak Community Park

Huitt-Zollars was selected to work with the City and a local subdivision to develop a new ten-acre park. A phasing strategy was co-created by the City and Huitt-Zollars to manage funding for the improvements. Phase 1 included two playground areas (one for preschoolers and one for 5- to 12-year-old children), a pavilion with restrooms, softball and baseball fields that include backstops, a junior-size soccer field, jogging trail encircling the site, and parking lot to accommodate ten vehicles.

Memorial Park at the Brazos River

The City of Sugar Land retained Huitt-Zollars to design Sugar Land Memorial Park, the initial plan for the development of the Brazos River Park, a 420-acre regional park along the Brazos River. Huitt-Zollars designed a 25-acre lake with islands, 2.5 miles of walking/jogging trails, a picnic pavilion, restroom building, parking areas, canoe launch, playground, and open space for sports activities. Through an agreement with the US 59 construction contractor, the lake was dug at no cost, saving the City nearly $5 million dollars.
